The question of my life
right now anyways
Brandon thought I should write an article or something about how many times I get asked the same question by everyone.
It happened today actually, and pretty much every time I meet a new person or talk to someone from my past.
It goes something like this:
"So, what are you doing?" and I reply, "Oh, I just graduated this summer, and now I'm just taking a photo class for fun." And 90% of the time, their reaction is, "Why aren't you working and using your college degree?"
To which I usually reply, "Umm, I'm not really interested in being a Social Worker and my husband works..." and they do the awkward silence so I like to switch over to talking about what Brandon is doing, because apparently my life is not as meaningful because I am not making any money.
Can anyone relate?
It's almost like how funny it is when you get married and EVERYone asks the same question over and over and over again, it goes like this... can anyone guess??... "So, how's married life?"
To which Brandon likes to reply to me under his breath: "Great, so, how's your sex life?" after smiling politely and saying "good, thanks". It's even funnier when it's an older couple asking and he is so tempted to ask, "How's your married life?" We've thought a lot about that question and I've heard it never ends. Next it is: "So, are you pregnant yet?" (Which is automatically my next most asked question, just after the, "why aren't you working?" one) Then, I've heard it is: "When is your baby due?", then, "When are going to have another baby?" then I don't know what else after that. Feel free to tell us what is next if you know.
This is not my attempt to scare away anyone who wants to talk to me, just to point out the funniness of the hidden message that everyone seems to be giving me. Which is: "Your worth is determined by your job/monetary contribution to society." And since I am not a mother yet, I cannot use that as my convenient excuse, which is also not highly valued in our society.
I beg to differ! I think being a mother will be the best thing that I can do with my life. I've heard that it is the most fulfilling and joyous experience, plus mothers are giving children the love and foundation they need. I should know! I did study the effect that families have on children, which in turn have an overall effect on society, whether positive or negative. This is not another one of my sociology essays, sorry ;) Brandon did suggest I write one though and I said, "NOO! I've written enough essays!!"
Anyways, like I was saying about how funny this question is and it's underlying connotation. Brandon says that he thinks that I am contributing to our family more that he is. Ha ha!
But in ways that our society doesn't accept as equal or better. Isn't that sad?
To answer the question for anyone who hasn't asked, and is now afraid to after hearing me rant, but still wants to ask me what I'm doing with my life:
*I am taking a digital photo class 2 days a week
*Also an institute class-New Testament
*I have a calling in the Young Women's, so all that it entails
*I clean the house and grocery shop
*Hang out with family and friends occasionally
*I research my family history
*I take care of Brandon ;)
*And, I write blogs for fun
Any other questions? :)

Don't be in such a hurry. When you're pregnant, everyone asks you "how are you feeling?" 25 times a day! I felt like saying, "Thanks for asking. I threw up twice today. My baby is kicking me in the ribs. I can't sleep and have trouble rolling over. How do you feel today?" :) hehe
